Pg. 29-39 Politics in Action: Amending the Constitution †¢ One of the most famous protests that truly revealed how the American government operates would have to be when Lee Johnson burned the American flag. o The president and the people insisted that an amendment be made to the Constitution so that flag desecrators can officially be punished. o As popular as this move was, the Supreme Court agreed that it did go against the Constitution by limiting people’s right to freedom of speech. †¢ This just goes to show not only how hard it is to make a permanent amendment to the Constitution but shows that the it was not meant to give power to the government. †¢ The true purpose of the Constitution was to protect the people and their rights by†¦show more content†¦o Slaves and servants are the only major exception but this is a topic for another day. †¢ For the most part, the King and Parliament let the colonies govern themselves with exception for foreign policy and trade. o However, this would all change in the year 1763 when the French and Indian War finally came to an end with the British as the victors. †¢ Due to the tremendous expenses war brings, a series of taxes was forced upon the colonists along with strict trade regulations. o This angered colonists because they had no representation in Parliament, meaning they were forced to do whatever the King ordered at this point. †¢ The first expression of revolution towards Great Britain would have to be Thomas Paine’s Common Sense in 1776. †¢ The committee that got together to discuss the possibility of obtaining independence and relations with Britain included many famous people like: o Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Robert Sherman. †¢ Declaration of Independence- The document approved by representatives of the American colonies in 1776 that stated their grievances against the British monarch and declared their independence. †¢ Even though Thomas Jefferson was primary writer of the document, the Declaration was highly influenced from several different sources: o Beliefs behind several European philosophers, the way the colonists felt about the King’s evil

Civil War Dbq Free Essays

AP US History This DBQ received a 7 Civil War DBQ As American settlers stretched westward in the 1850’s, the ambiguity of the Constitution framed 60 years earlier increased sectional tension over the topic of slavery. Initially, the framers of the constitution left the issue of slavery to be worked out in the country’s future. This in turn convinced the Southern states that their â€Å"peculiar institution† would be â€Å"respected and maintained. We will write a custom essay sample on Civil War Dbq or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, as years passed, the United States acquired more territory, and as more territories applied for statehood, the issue arose whether or not the new states would be admitted as a Slave State or Free State. Americans also disputed the very status of a slave, and whether or not a fugitive slave in the Northern Free States was guaranteed his or her freedom from their masters down south. It was debates like these, due to the vague details of the constitution, that created enormous repercussions– ones that would trigger a series of Slavery related legislation, and ultimately the destruction the union. Following President Polk’s successful victory against the young Republic of Mexico, Americans gained a significant amount of western land including Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and most importantly the promising, golden coastal territory of California. To pacify the growing discord between North and South, the Democratic Senator, Stephan Douglas of Illinois, combined 5 Bills that would secure California as a Free State and would abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. It also included the Fugitive Slave Act. In addition, Utah and New Mexico would grant its citizens popular sovereignty. This was the Compromise of 1850. As a result, New Mexico and Utah became slave states. Due to the Federal Constitution’s vagueness, this compromise allowed states to decide for themselves the issue of slavery. Consequently, the most favorable and democratic solution seemed Louis Cass’s idea of popular sovereignty. Four years later, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Congress, which again allowed popular sovereignty in the Nebraska Territory. This also repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which prohibited slavery north of the 36-30 degree of latitude. As a result, Nebraska became a slave state. However, in the fear of losing Kansas to Anti-Slavery settlers, Pro-Slavery Missourians flooded Kansas to overwhelm the polls on Election Day. Though Slavery had passed in Kansas, it was charged a fraud. In 1856, this erupted into the infamous conflict between the Pro-Slavery â€Å"Border Ruffians† and the John Brown supporters of abolitionism. Nicknamed â€Å"Bleeding Kansas,† it was America’s first violent conflict over the unsettled issue of slavery. As a lame duck, Pro-Slavery President Pierce, relied on settling the conflict with the LeCompton Constitution of 1857—a constitution that would legalize slavery in Kansas. Buchanan, soon after, took office just before congress voted. Though passed by the Senate, the LeCompton Constitution failed in the House of Representatives because Northern Democrats fled to the Republican Party. Pierce’s failure to recognize the depth of the Free-Soiler’s sentiment in the North led the historic Midterm Elections of 1858. Republicans, the Anti-Slavery party established only four years prior, took a plurality in the House of Representatives, foreshadowing Lincoln’s election in 1861 and ultimately, Southern succession. As the creation of Slave and Free States spurred political debate, the individual status of a slave remained questionable due to legislation being nonexistent in the Constitution. Following the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act pressured Northerns to recapture and return slaves that fled north. This mandate became the first constitutional law that limited the rights of slaves, nonetheless â€Å"forcing slavery down the throats† of Free Soilers in the north. Northerns could now no longer ride the fence, because now they were coerced by law to act. This also strengthened the Abolitionist movement led by William Lloyd Garrison, which had already picked up momentum from Harriett Beacher Stowe’s best-selling novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852. Another historic event that resulted in the Constitution’s ambiguity was the Supreme Court case Scott v. Sanford. Being a former slave residing in the free-state of Wisconsin, Dred Scott sued for his freedom. However, in 1857 Chief Justice Roger B. Taney ruled by â€Å"majority opinion† that any blacks, regardless of their territory, possessed no right to sue. They had rights. This decision angered many Northerns because the ruling was based off opinion alone. There was no clear Constitutional law that had justified prohibiting the rights of Northern free black. Moreover, to maintain national unity, the original absence of any constitutional restriction or protection of the institution of slavery led to sectional discord. Such tension between North and South, due to their polarizing philosophical views on slavery, led individual states to decide whether or not they were Pro- or Anti-Slavery. In addition, Federal (Pro-Slavery) legislation ironically began to deny the citizenship of even Free Blacks within Free States, which seems almost hypocritical for the Pro-Slavery leaders to proclaim States’ Rights to justify their succession. However, because there was no constitutional restriction, Southerns lawfully claimed had the right to succeed from the Union, and did so in 1861 out fear of Lincoln’s Freeport Doctrine. Therefore, because the constitution circumvented the issue of slavery to achieve national unity, the addition of new states reintroduced the sectional discord rooted in slavery, which ultimately dissolved the union. English Coursework Essay Paper Example For Students

English Coursework Essay Paper I seriously do not think that things could get any worse. Ive lost my job at the factory, my mother passed away last week, and there was an Eviction notice on my doorway as I entered my flat. A huge black hole has just opened before me, and its calling me towards it.  More about the factory my boss, Mr. Birling, had been a nice enough man up until now. He paid me a little amount compared to what I should have been earning, and although I had been fine with it, some of the girls confided in me that they felt that he was being unreasonable. In my excitement that people felt the same as me, we set up an organisation in which I would demand more money from him. We decided that confronting him directly was the best form of attack, so I did it the day after the agreement. I marched in there, a petition in my hands, and said boldly,  Mr. Birling, the other girls and I are quite appalled with the amount that youre paying us. We believe that if you do not raise the amount by three shillings or more, we should have the right to leave.  He stared at me for a few moments, a thoughtful expression becoming of him. I smiled genteelly, and waited how I waited! After about ten minutes or so, he replied, a glint in his eye,  You believe that eh? Well let me tell you something girly, I dont have time for you and your little friends. Either you like what Im paying you, or you get out. No wait. Youre fired.  He is the most selfish, arrogant, narrow-minded creature I have ever had the misfortune of working for. Dear Diary,  Although my outlook is still quite bleak, not everything is going badly. I have a new job at a beautiful ladies clothing shop very select. The ladies there are very polite, and the pay is a third more than what I had been paid at Birlings, so Im fitting in well.  Also, at the Palace Bar the other night, I was just drinking my vodka, when that huge Joe whatshisname, Joe Meggarty he ambled over to me and started pressing himself against me! Well, I was so disgusted I didnt do anything he was almost suffocating with his stench of body odour and cigar smoke. I was about to kick him in the family jewels, when suddenly a young, handsome stranger pulled him off of me, and gave him a right telling off. My heart was fluttering madly, I can tell you. Ive never felt so thrilled! He came over to me afterwards, and took my hand gently.  Are you all right, Madam? he asked, polite as you can be. Well, I didnt know what to say, so I just nodded. He was ever so charming, and so good looking.  He took me back to my home that night, and told me ever so kindly that if I needed anything, that I must call. He was about to leave, when I called him back we soon found ourselves in an embrace. I never meant for it to happen but it felt so very right.  Dear Diary,  Things can only get better! Gerald (the lovely young man) gave me money, food and a nice place to stay. He also gave me something else but thats more of an action.  I think Im falling so hard for him. He seeps into my dreams, emblazons into my mind at the most inappropriate times. I was working today, when I remembered a kiss we had shared earlier according to Mavis, I blushed most ungracefully. I was serving Lady Green at that moment had she noticed, I could have been reprimanded quite severely. .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .postImageUrl , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:hover , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:visited , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:active { border:0!important; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:active , .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160 .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc26a0600104ea69a70501559518de160:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Accidental Death Of an Anarchist EssayDear Diary,  Someone scrape me off of this earth and dump me in a doggy bag. Please.  Gerald told me today that he has a partner! He described her in great detail, which means he obviously loves her dearly. I think I handled it quite well, although the expletives I hurled at him on the way out were quite uncomplimentary. I dont think he heard me, however.  So he loves another woman.  To add to this to this monstrosity, I was fired AGAIN. This time from somewhere I was perfectly happy working in and this time it was not my fault. A young woman came into our boutique, and began trying on a series of dresses. I was lost in my own little world, so I had hardly noticed her there. I remembered something funny that Gerald had told me the night before, and I laughed loudly. The girls eyes flew to mine, and she looked rather affronted. I hadnt realised what she thought I had done until Betty hissed to me that I was in for it big time.  Madame Grey called me into her office and told me that the woman had made a formal complaint about me I was incredibly insulted, and began to defend myself, but this seemed to make Madame Grey even angrier. She fired me on the spot, no warnings. I cried with anger the moment I stepped out of the shop.

The Now Wedding Final Project free essay sample

There was a tremendous amount of planning, organizing and tasks that needed to be accomplished for the â€Å"NOW† wedding to take place on time, in budget and for it to be perfectly memorable for everyone, especially Lauren and Conner. For Lauren to have the wedding that she dreamed of there were numerous tasks that needed to be accomplished immediately. The first task that needed to be accomplished was to secure the church and reception hall, until the address of the wedding is determined and secured the invitations could not be sent out. The invitations needed to be sent out a week before the couple decided to have the wedding to make sure that everyone could be there, however that was not an option. Dresses had to be made and altered as well as securing the wedding decorations, caterer and wedding party members. The major constraint the wedding couple faced was the time constraint, trying to pull all of the elements together in order to create the perfect wedding would have been difficult at best. We will write a custom essay sample on The Now Wedding Final Project or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The critical path is very tight and there could be no room for mistakes, misunderstandings, or delays. The resources required for this project were mainly people and money. The more people helping to bring all the elements together, the quicker everything could get done. The financial resources, controlled by the brides father, were necessary to move up the processing time especially where the brides dress was concerned. Figure 1. 1 utilizes a Gantt Chart to show the timeframe of the project to include sequencing of sub tasks: Fig 1. 1 [pic] The costs associated with the project are as follows: [pic] This risks for the budget are the following items: Maid of Honor Travel$1000. 00 Airfrieght 20. 00 Seamstress 240. 00 Invitation Incentive 20. 00 Invitations Help 40. 00 Possible Budget Overruns$1320. 00 The following fishbone diagram details all the current risks for the project: [pic] The method of tracking the progress of the â€Å"NOW† Wedding will be the Stop Light Chart, it is a very simple method of tracking what has been completed and what has yet to be started. Following is the Stop Light Chart which would be used at the beginning of the project: [pic] The â€Å"NOW† Wedding Case Study Questions Part A [pic] Creating the wedding schedule as outlined in the text it shows that the planning for the wedding should have occurred at least a month before it did. We would reduce the time it takes of the mother of the bride to put together the guest list by utilizing all available resources (manning) having all attendants present to create the list and a comprehensive address list (thereby minimizing the risk of one person having all this information). Invitations must be ordered on the 2nd of January with the guest list completed on the 1st. While the invitations are at print, the dresses would be designed on the 3rd with the materials being ordered immediately. The creation of a work flow chart would list out all of the tasks that must be completed assigning individual tasks to individual members of the wedding party. The budget needs to be set immediately and using the budget form above the wedding party has created the master list of objectives and goals. Utilizing the stop light will keep the project on track with constant updates as to the progress on each item. The Maid of Honor needs to be brought in immediately to participate in the planning and execution and to have measurements taken on sight to avoid the risk of the dresses not being made correctly. Part B There would be no conflict caused by the Chairman of the Vestry Committee not reducing the notice period from 14 to 7 days and I would not have recommended using the extra funds to reduce the notice period as the requirement for 14 days notice has been met by depositing the funds to secure the room on the 1st of January. Since the Wedding is scheduled for the 21st of January, there is no need to reduce the notice period. If the project were started on January 1, the Mother getting the flu would not have impacted the guest list completion as it would have been completed by January 2. Since this is the first stage of the entire project, the suggestions would have been made that the mother, bride and all of the attendants get together the night of the 1st and make a complete list. It is not until this list is completed that any plans can be made including ordering the invitations, cakes, catering, etc†¦ Since the invitations would have been ordered on the 2nd of January, the Bride would have had an xtra few days in the delivery of the invitations. The extra day for print would be compensated for by reducing the addressing phase and rather than asking for paid part-time help, there would be another get together on the night of the 9th to get all of the invitations addressed thereby reducing the number of days down to one. When the material and lace were lost in transit then the recommendation would be to have the Bride cancel the order, receive the funds back from the lost order and take all bridesmaids and Maid of Honor to a local bridal store and purchase dresses.

Lost Boy Essays - Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Lost Boy, Free Essays

Lost Boy Essays - Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Lost Boy, Free Essays Lost Boy Dave Peltzer the author of The Lost Boy tells his story from the time he left his abusive mother and alcoholic father, through his experiences in five foster homes and juvenile detention, and how he eventually made it into the Air Force. He was a defiant, rebellious boy who, despite his background and personality, managed to endear himself to many guardians, social workers, and teachers. Pelzer writes in an honest, sometimes rambling, style; he is never bitter, and his story will find many sympathetic readers. The main purpose for Dave to write this book is to show at what lengths children and adolescents have gone to over come the unmentionable hardships of and abusive family. The three most valuable things I have learned from this book are very hard to choose. The book was full of many things to help me in my everyday life. Ranging from how to deal with kids who have be through abusive situations to how kids of abuse act in general. The first one has to be, Dave was very tactful in how he handled his thoughts and feelings. Many children his age are running around chasing girls and hanging with the guys. Not him he was studying hard and trying to be better than his parents were. He would always squander away what he had, so no one could take what was rightfully his and that includes his life. The second thing that was useful was how Dave was never angry with his situation he would just look at it as another challenge. Many times through out the book Dave would have to change foster homes after being fairly settled in the way of living there. Most teens his age cant handle a great deal of change but Dave would just go with the flow and never bat an eye lash. The third most valuable thing has to be his willingness to help. I would think that since no one would help him he would not help anyone else. On the contrary, Dave was always helping with chores, making dinner, and doing little extra things he didnt have to do. I later found out through reading the book that Daves willingness to help stems from his need to feel loved and wanted. I can honestly say that I could never have gone through the painstaking trials and tribulations Dave went though while he was in his teen yes. It take a special person to do that and Dave is that special person. PARENTING TECHNIQUES Daves mother was a very troubled woman who for some unknown reason liked to target Dave and blame him for any and all bad things that happened. His mother was and Authoritative and neglectful at the same time. Some may say how can one parent be on both extremes of things but there are a few instance with in the book which shows both. For example Daves mother would make him do all the chores and never was aloud to play. For some reason even if Dave finished what he was told to do in the time he was told to do it he would not be fed or worse he would be part of his mother Games and Test. His mothers Games and Tests range from putting him in freezing cold water for 5 hours at a time to making him sit on the garage steps with his hands under his bottom head strait a head for up to 36 hours at a time no food, bathroom, shower or other needs to live. Dave was saved from this horror when he was 15 but he was in foster care and the parenting techniques ranged from authoritarian to indulgent, but anything was better than what he had endured at his mothers house. DELINQUENCY Dave in his teen years was for the most part a very well behaved boy. He was working hard in school and kept to himself for the most part. Although Dave did have a small problem he like to take things with out asking or stealing. Daves stealing habits stem from his basic survival needs that he instinctively put up when his mother would make him go with out food, water, and basic sanitation. Dave at times would also lash out at his foster families so that they would not get to close to him. In some cases when Dave would lash out he would be put into another foster home and have
